I am teaching since more than 35 years now, from kids to superb players and what i found out over the years is that musical taste always comes first. Musical taste is the foundation of everything and leads you what to listen, what to learn, what to practice next and how you see things. It seems to come naturally but since as a teacher you are able to guide and support to develope of my students  develope this is a never ending process and can be developed through many years of listening to music. But without focussing also on developing the technical skills on your instrument your outcome will not match your musical taste to your satisfaction. Simple as that. It is undoubtedly mandatory to get as good as you can on your musical instrument but then - personal taste comes first! It is the mother of all and leads you to the path of your own musical understanding, your own voice, your own language of music and eventually your own vision of music.
